About Us

In the Beginning:

Before 1901 golf was played on the Waratah Reserve prior to the club being formed in association with the Tennis Club at Dangar Park. By 1905 the popularity of the game had grown in professional and business sections of the city. This growth caused autonomy for golf administration to be essential to proposed developments such as a club house for golfers.

This was achieved with the club's first permanent club house at Dangar park in 1905, the first year of autonomy.

The Growing Years:

By 1919 the club had prospered to such an extent that a new links location was sought. The matter of acquiring land eleswhere was considered with the result that is was decided that the members secure their own property at Cockle Creek for the transfer of the links. One hundred and two acres was purchased from the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company adjoing the Cockle Creek Railway Station.

From 1921, when the first game was played on the new links until the present day the club has continued to prosper despite fire, floods and crippling droughts. The links are still considered one of the best in the State with course improvements occuring all the time thanks to our dedicated green staff and a tremendously hard working group of volunteers.

Where we're going:

Waratah Golf Club will continue to provide the best course possible now and into the future. We will continue to offer the best possible amenities to member and visitors at all times without compromise. We will continue to foster the growth of golf with our junior and cadet programs run by our club professional and his staff.

And finally we will make our next ninety years as good as or better than our first one hundred and ten.
